Agave potatorum - Tobala
Agave potatorum - Tobala
The epithet name "potatorum" is derived from the Latin word 'potator' meaning "of the drinkers" in reference to the use of this plant in making alcoholic beverages. Also know as "Papalome" in some regions.
One can confidently describe Agave potatorum as a 1-2 foot compact agave with a symmetrical rosette of approximately 80 unique leaves. These leaves vary in color from gray-green to white and are almost twice as long as they are wide. The spiny edges of the leaves are highly textured and tinted with reddish-brown 1" long terminal spines.
This particular species thrives in mountainous and semi desert regions of Oaxaca and Puebla, many believe it to be a hybrid of other agaves and is also cultivated ornamentally in Japan. Prefers mild, dry climates. Grown primarily from seed as it rarely produces hijuelos.
