Native to the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Veracruz, Agave karwinskii is known by many names. Not only does this agave have many names but different forms as well, often you will find information that relates to this agave but more specifically to Madrecuixe and not Cuishe. The diversity in this specific silvestre (wild) agave speaks to the importance of biodiversity and diverse ecological range.

From a distance, it closely resembles Yucca aloifolia, with woody trunks reaching up to 4 m (13 ft) in height and elongated, upright crowns of stiff, succulent, pale green leaves. These leaves are heavily armed with black thorns along the edges, making it a robust natural barrier.

This agave is highly versatile and can thrive in various growing conditions, including drought and moderate freezes. Additionally, it is a valuable source of raw material used in the production of mezcal.
